Position Title:                     PIT Operations Lead Hand

This position encompasses general oversight of the plant powered industrial lift truck operations including, but not limited to daily vehicle inspections and reporting, vehicle repair coordination, receiving/offloading/securing of receipts, inventory put-away, inventory picking, trailer loading, material handling within the plant and warehouse, preparation of empty carts/racks for loading and return to suppliers, facility housekeeping, LPG tank refills, battery charging and maintenance and related duties, as well as, PIT operator assessments and training.


The PIT Operations LH must be skilled in the use of both electric and LPG Counterbalance and Reach equipment; must be well versed in material handling techniques specific to the JW Woodbridge plant; and must be able to effectively assess and train the other PIT operators and provide necessary support.




  • Offloading materials from delivery vehicles.
  • Verifying offloaded materials for obvious damage and advising the responsible Buyer or the Manager of Inventory & Purchasing of any damage that may warrant refusal of receipt.
  • Verifying offloaded materials against associated packing slips and identifying discrepancies.
  • Securing offloaded materials in the appropriate way.
  • Forwarding the packing slips to the Receiver for processing
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Placing received products in the required warehouse locations (if insufficient space provide overflow location data to Purchasing).
  • Based on production request, retrieve require products from the warehouse using FIFO methodology and place in the requested production WIP locations.
  • When picking products, advise Purchasing whenever stock qty’s are nearing depletion.



  • Maintaining all warehouse storage locations in an orderly manner.
  • Relocating products from loc to loc as deemed necessary to maintain order (this must eb done in conjunction with the Purchasing & Inventory Control manager’s directions).


Empty Cart/Rack Preparation & loading:

  • Breaking down all empty glass racks and/or product buggies and stack as per SOP’s.
  • Loading all empty carts/buggies on the required transport vans.
  • For glass racks and/or any other products that are destined for the US, prepare and/or obtain duly completed Bill of Lading.

Facility Housekeeping:

  • Move refuse from the plant floor to the appropriate external storage bins.
  • When performing daily duties, physically pick up all visible debris in the warehouse storage areas and dispose of.
  • Reporting any anomalies to the Mgr, Purchasing and Inventory Control.


Equipment Servicing/Maintenance:

  • Performing daily lift truck inspections, complete the inspection form and submit to the Manager, Purchasing & Inventory Control each day (advising of any conditions found that require repair).
  • Ensuring all battery-powered units are plugged in to the correct chargers at the end of the shift.
  • Ensuring all battery electrolyte levels are topped up as required.
  • Ensuring safe transfer of liquid propane gas cylinders as needed and ensure all full and empty LPG cylinders are properly stored.
  • Advising the Manager, Purchasing & Inventory Control of any issues encountered with the equipment during the normal course of business.


Additional Lead Hand Responsibilities include:

  • Review the daily vehicle inspection reports and ensure necessary corrective action has been executed;
  • Provide direct support to the other PIT operators in terms of training on both use of equipment and manipulation of materials;
  • Conduct required periodic assessments and recertification of all PIT operators;
  • Oversee introduction of new PIT operators (both full time and part time/temporary agency workers);
  • Champion a safe working environment;
  • Monitor PIT Operator attendance and report on associated issues;
  • Participate in PIT operator evaluations as required;
  • Associated duties as required.



  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Direct Jeld-Wen Woodbridge facility PIT operations is mandatory;
  • Possession of a recognized lift truck operator competency certificate is mandatory.
  • Possession of a recognized PIT Operators Training certificate (aka Train-The -Trainer) is mandatory;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating powered material handling equipment is mandatory.


Skills and Requirements:

  • Good communications abilities (both written and verbal);
  • Demonstrated ability to train personnel in sare and efficient PIT operations;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced warehouse and manufacturing environment;
  • Ability to safely operate powered material handling equipment in a variety of conditions including short periods working outside;
  • Strong focus on the safe operation of powered material handling equipment including the use of required PPE at all times;


Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • This position requires a combination of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching and climbing throughout the regular work day.
  • The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
  • The employee may be exposed to brief periods of extreme weather including heat, cold, rain, wind, snow and sunshine during the course of work.
  • Working hours may be 6:30 am to 3:00 pm Monday to Friday or 4:30 pm to 1:00 am Monday to Thursday and 3:30 pm to 12:00 am Friday or 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm Monday to Friday depending on what shift is hiring.
  • There will be the occasional need for overtime during both the week and some weekends throughout the year.
