We are now looking for a R&D Engineer  to join the team here at JELD-WEN Sheffield, the role is responsible for the ideation, technical feasibility and execution of the project’s within our Interior door product category. 


This role will be focused on creating and maintaining product ranges that are compliant to current and future building regulation whilst addressing consumer needs with enhanced features/performance and deploying the latest manufacturing processes within the timber industry.



  • Ensure adherence with all compliance standards and operate with integrity at all times.
  • Responsible for Interior door product development and implementation
  • Run the product development responsibilities of R&D within the Tollgate system as top priority.
  • Develop a deep and detailed understanding of the design, specification and performance of existing products.
  • Standardise where possible methodologies and JW best practices.
  • Develop an understanding of opportunities offered by new materials, techniques, and designs, and incorporate these into solutions aligned to our strategy.
  • Keep abreast of the latest industry trends and competitor landscape.
  • Create SolidWorks CAD designs/drawings to meet the above requirements.
  • Maintain and develop our ePDM drawing register and control the issue of drawings for manufacture.
  • Responsible for product change request and product change order process.
  • Create and maintain technical design specification documents.
  • Create documentation packages at design freeze to aid implementation into manufacture (product drawings, product rules, product specifications, BOM, PIM)
  • To assist and input into product testing requirements, both in-house and externally.
  • Ensure products meet regulatory compliance and products are documented according to standards, certificates, and approvals.
  • Attend and participate in industry technical committees, training, product testing and other duties off-site.
  • Communicate with notified bodies to create EXAP, assessments and similar product approvals.
  • Aid in the root-cause analysis of warranty claims/factory issues and feedback into the product development cycle
  • Work closely with Product Management to understand business priorities and develop future product pipelines.
  • Work closely with operations and procurement departments to execute VAVE and productivity initiatives.
  • Ensure products are designed and developed to meet sustainability and environmental requirements, including end-of-life disposal.
  • Work in accordance with ISO 9001 and 14001 procedures
  • Support and develop the companies SQDCI methodology in both the office environment and factory.



  • Essential: Proven experience as an R&D engineer or equivalent, with experience in manufacturing.
  • Essential: Highly proficient in use of CAD software (Solidworks preferable)
  • Essential: Proven record of delivering projects from cradle to grave.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of design requirements for construction products
  • Desirable: Experience of the joinery / fenestration industry
  • Highly Desirable: Experience calculating U Values and/or energy ratings / CFD simulation.
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Desirable: Understanding/knowledge of British, European and International standards relevant to construction products
  • Essential:  Ability to develop a thorough understanding/knowledge of the Building Regulations throughout the UK
  • Desirable: Experience developing BIM objects.
