Position Title:  Prototype Lab Technician 2

 

Position Rating/Level:   Staff level position

 

Job Purpose:  The Technician 2 position exists to support functions and activities in the R&D/Engineering and Prototype Lab.  This position will support the production of products and services to achieve department and company goals.  Responsible for the timely and accurate CNC prototype parts, set-up and operation of a 5 axis CNC machining center under the supervision of Lab Technician 3.  Will be a member of a team to produce low volume high variation one-off prototype parts, under minimal supervision from the Lab Technician 3 and or Prototype Lab Manager.

 

The Technician 2 supports Product Development/Engineering process by executing design concepts into prototype samples and assemblies. Works with designers and engineers to create the best samples possible for communication to our Product Line Managers, Architectural Consultants and upper level management.  Contributes input to the design and engineering process by commenting on the Design For Manufacturing (DFM) technique for new designs.  Assists in the design and development of new products, including improvements to existing products to improve the performance.  These improvements are not limited to product but, includes process improvements within the lab and production.  Maintains tooling, equipment, and operating supplies for area of work.

 

Reports to:  Prototype Lab Manager.  Works closely with Prototype Technician 3, Senior Designers and Product Engineers.

         

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This position requires training and supervision by Prototype Lab Manager and Product Engineers.
  • Medium level of CNC Programming skills.  Ability to run a 5 axis Machine and do program adjustments as needed
  • Ability to read and alter G&M Code
  • Some offline programming knowledge and use of CAD/CAM system.
  • Ability to read and understand complex mechanical/architectural drawings and 3D models to include sectional, auxiliary, and multi-views, assemblies, and dimensions.
  • Must be detailed oriented with strong organizational skills and be able to identify and solve problems independently.
  • Support prototype build activities.
  • Support process development by providing feedback on prototype build issues.  Contributes input to the design and engineering process by commenting on the part design and assembly techniques for new designs.
  • Selection of tools, equipment and methods that provide the most effective machining of prototype parts.
  • Develop unique fixturing
  • Communicate with core team and management.  Work instructions may be given from Lab Manager or engineering.  They can be specific or broad assignments.  Record and report status, process improvements
  • Ability to set up and operate testing and inspection equipment.
  • Inspects parts and assemblies for conformance to specifications.
  • Must be able to read and work with engineering drawings.
  • Coordinates materials with Lab Manager and Engineers.
  • Communicate any issues with Prototype Lab Manager and Product Engineers.
  • Communicate workload with Prototype Lab Manager
  • Must be comfortable running tables saws, miter saws, drill press, router, shaper, surface planer and sanders.

 

Preferred Position Requirements:

  • Education: minimum education of High School diploma – college or Vo-Tech preferred (equivalent experience in a machining / mechanical trade).
  • Experience: 2-4 years of CNC Mill / CNC lathe, and Conventional machinery set-up and operation.  Prefer experience with prototype machining. 
  • Mid level position in terms of the complexity of work, aptitude for executing ideas into actual samples.
  • Strong interactive and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of engineering and manufacturing processes used to build products.  Understanding of machining techniques and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Requires some supervision and training from Prototype Lab Technician 3, Prototype Lab Manager.
