Summary: The Product Hardware Engineer II will be responsible for developing innovative solutions for new and existing product hardware, manufacturing processes and techniques within the Windows team. The team currently manages and develops new products and technologies within JELD-WEN’s windows and patio doors product lines. The Engineer will work closely with Designers, Product Engineer I’s, Senior Product Engineers, the Product Engineering Manager, Industrial/Aesthetic Designer and Product Management to carry out a variety of product designs and project work within the team.

The Product Hardware Engineer II position is a mid-senior level product/project engineering position that will lead large-scale multi-body design projects from cradle to launch with the guidance of Industrial/Aesthetic Designer, Senior Product Engineers and/or the Product Engineering Manager and provide valuable input and foresight into strategic engineering and company initiatives. The Engineer will lead teams of Designers, Product Engineer I’s or Product Engineer II’s, however the Engineer II shall have no direct reports. The Engineer will work with all members of the Engineering team, Industrial/Aesthetic Designer and Product Management to understand and translate the voice of the customer (VOC), sales, warranty, and cost metrics into successful product/project specifications, resulting in new products or product improvements.

The Product Hardware Engineer II will be exposed to the multiple JELD-WEN manufacturing sites, personnel, methods, and machinery used to produce JELD-WEN product within the Window category and will be a member of the teams that are tasked with improving manufacturing techniques, processes, and specification of new equipment to support new and legacy product hardware designs. The Product Hardware Engineer shall always be cognizant of manufacturing techniques and equipment in the execution of product hardware design improvements and new product hardware launches to ensure components are able to be produced efficiently and will not require multiple iterations of design revision prior to production.

The Product Hardware Engineer II will be exposed to hardware supplier manufacturing sites, personnel, methods, and machinery used to produce hardware for windows and doors. The Product Hardware Engineer will assist with improving manufacturing techniques, processes, and specification of new equipment to support product hardware designs. #LI-TG1

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

 

  • This is a mid-senior level position and requires some training and supervision by Industrial/Aesthetic Designer, Senior Product Engineers and Product Engineering Manager.
  • Manage product hardware design projects with moderate complexity.
  • Manage/supervise work done by Designers and Product Engineer I’s.
  • Apply engineering background to develop unique product hardware solutions to problems.
  • Leader/Member of brainstorming groups and design reviews.
  • Identify the requirements of product hardware development projects on a per project basis and work through the group to fulfill those requirements.
  • Participate as a team member and at times lead multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Coordinate testing and certification of all the product hardware under her/his jurisdiction.
  • Communicate with suppliers as required.
  • Review drawings and engineering change requests (ECR’s) for accuracy.
  • Prepares mid-level complex mechanical/architectural 2D sketches and 3D models using computer aided design (CAD) and pictorial techniques.
  • Creates mechanical/architectural drawings by reviewing models, sketches, descriptions, specifications, and supporting documents; conferring with other Product Engineer II’s, Industrial/Aesthetic Designer and Senior Product Engineers. The finished product must be a professional drawing package.
  • Perform, understand and execute upon the results of structural finite element analysis (FEA) and/or thermal computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to determine the best and most efficient solution possible.
  • Utilize the drawing number system within the Autodesk Vault – JELD-WEN’s product data management (PDM) system
  • Modifies drawings by analyzing, resolving, and incorporating changes.
  • Maintain the project information within the PDM system and project sites.

  • Perform preliminary drawing and bill of materials (BOM) checks before the drawing(s) and/or BOM(s) are submitted to checker, other Product Engineer II’s or Senior Product Engineers.
  • Generate/check BOM’s for the Data Department.
  • Checks drawings/work done by other Designers, Product Engineer I’s or Product Engineer II’s.
  • Update red lines if required
  • Responsible for assisting in the Drawing, CAD, and 3D Modeling Standards.
  • Communicate workload with Industrial/Aesthetic Designer, Senior Product Engineers and Product Engineering Manager.
  • Build and test prototypes.
  • Maintain a sense of urgency/responsibility daily with all projects.
  • Ensure product hardware designs are manufacturing friendly.
  • Review designs with plant personnel and JELD-WEN’s Manufacturing and Automation Equipment teams.
  • Review designs with hardware suppliers and JELD-WEN Sourcing team.
  • Work with, mentor, and train Designers levels I & II and Product Engineer I’s.
  • Evaluates materials and makes recommendations.
  • Keep abreast of changes in the industry, materials, and process technologies.
  • Work with leadership to ensure that Product Hardware Engineering is meeting their needs.

 

Preferred Position Requirements:

 

  • Education: BS in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • CAD and Drafting Skills, Parametric 3D modeling, GD&T principles. Experience with AutoCAD, Inventor and EPDM systems are a plus.
  • Understanding and application of tolerances, datums, and tolerance stacks.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Experience: 3-7 years as a mid-senior level project/product engineer with relevant background leading multi-body design projects and project teams of engineers from cradle to launch. A history of proven work with product/project/sales managers building new product design (NPD) business cases based on the VOC, existing sales, competitive market, and warranty data along with existing and new hardware manufacturing technology is required. In addition, a history of proven work leading NPD launches hand in hand with manufacturing, supply chain and quality departments are required as well.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Requires little supervision and training by Industrial/Aesthetic Designer and/or Senior Product Engineer.
  • Interfaces with outside suppliers.
  • Ability and a proven track record of maintaining a professional drawing system.
  • Proven track record for completing NPD projects on time and on budget.
  • Proven track record of hands on design and manufacturing experience.
  • Proven track record of working with manufacturing plants and supply chain to develop and deliver solutions that are manufacturable early in the development process.
  • Experience with packaging design, window and patio door design are a plus, however no experience shall not hinder an applicant.
  • Experience in embedded systems is a plus.

Travel:

 

  • 5-20% travel is anticipated with the potential for international travel.
