Internal Job Description

Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Plant Manager, the Materials Manager is responsible for managing the management of materials planning, materials control, materials strategy, production scheduling, and all material project initiatives.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the material control functions in the plant including master scheduling, plant floor control, inventory planning and control, purchasing, MRO crib, packing operations and shipping with focus and direction on Continuous Improvements (CI) and SQDCI activities and initiatives in their plant/facility. 
  • Manages the planning and establishment of production schedules, monitoring of material inventories, tracking the progress of production and reviewing factors which affect production schedules and mitigate negative impacts to same.
  • Manage suppliers, materials and inventory in a manner consistent with the requirements of a Lean Six-Sigma, JIT, and OTD manufacturing environment.
  • Manages the purchasing and inventory control functions. Provides support to production scheduling on all material flow issues to meet production schedules and customer requirements, and Continuous Improvement strategies.
  • Maintains optimum inventory levels to insure on-time deliveries to meet customer requirements while maximizing turns, minimizing carrying costs and premium transportation charges by utilizing JIT and OTD strategies. 
  • Works with Sourcing and Supply Chain Departments, Continuous Improvement Managers/Teams, and R&D involving new materials, suppliers, and processes to achieve the best possible quality, reliability, prices, continuity and delivery.
  • Establish and maintain material purchase plan allocations and pricing data within the appropriate JELD-WEN systems. Issue purchase orders and manage and rectify price discrepancies on invoices with Accounts Payable.
  • Works with R&D, Continuous Improvement Managers and teams involving new materials, suppliers, and processes to achieve the best possible quality, reliability, prices, continuity and delivery in accordance with corporate KPI’s.
  • May perform other or specified duties as directed by the Plant Manager.

 

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Management, Sourcing, Business Administration, Accounting, Engineering or a related field and at least five (5) years of Materials Management experience preferred.
  • An Associate’s Degree and seven (7) to (10) years of experience in Materials Management or related field, in a manufacturing environment may be substituted for a Bachelor’s Degree at the discretion of management.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the Degrees at the discretion of management. 
  • American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) certification a huge plus. Fundamental understanding of ISM.
  • Minimum of four (4) years management experience is desired for the position.
  • Expertise with SAP.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process improvement techniques including Lean manufacturing processes and Continuous Improvement (CI) methodologies, as well as SQDCI, TPS, JIT, and OTD  goals and objectives needed.
  • Knowledge of Lab/OSHA, and health and safety standards and compliance.
  • Travel required: 25%+/-.
