The Penrith site produces in excess of 40,000 internal doors a week – it’s a fast past paced high volume dynamic work environment with ever changing challenges and opportunities to continually improve the overall performance.


Jeld-Wen acquired the Penrith site in 2002, with 180 employees and a footprint of 24,000 square metres the site manufactures over 2m doors per year. The plant is in a great location on the edge of the Lake District with easy access to the motorway network.


With further growth in the pipeline, JELD-WEN are are currently looking for a Group Manager ( Electrical ) to add to our teams in Penrith - please see a breakdown of the core duties and responsiblities. This role involves working with multiple teams - please find a breakdown of those personel below. 



Leads the Engineering activities towards world-class performance; make continuous improvement standard practice. Educate, develop and inspire team members towards betterment and achievement.


Lead the site maintenance function in providing both a reactive and proactive multi-skilled maintenance service on all operational equipment & infrastructure. Responsible for overseeing the adherence and timely completion of work carried out.


Increase the site operational effectiveness, mean time between failure, mean time to repair and a reduction in downtime. Manage the team on technical best practice & establish dept. procedures whilst mentoring the team to adopt modern manufacturing practices & behaviours including 5S, TPM, Standard Work, Problem Solving and daily accountability.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Keep machinery in production
  • Drive departments 5s campaigns and demonstrate 5s expansion as part of daily cadence
  • Promotes self-improvement
  • Received and issues permits to work and ensure engineering work is carried out to H&S, environmental and engineering standards
  • Assisting with the training and coaching with the apprentices and team
  • Implementation of Risk Assessments and support of HASSARD assessments
  • Coach, mentor and educate employees to develop, support and sustain a maintenance culture - establish improvement as a way of life
  • Develop and deliver Productivity pipeline improvement projects and savings
  • Plan and deliver Engineering projects across the site to deliver business cost reduction targets
  • Develop and challenge the production and engineering team to embed the lean tools, techniques and leadership behaviours - be an ambassador for engineering programme
  • Facilitate and lead engineering events as the subject matter expert
  • Leverage best practices established through engineering projects to other activities
  • Execute plans by building and utilising cross-functional teams to meet /exceed business goals
  • Coach others to enhance their personal performance by setting clear targets and SMART objectives
  • Monitor cost, schedule and progress of all engineering projects and events, intervene to take remedial actions where appropriate
  • Encourage knowledge sharing across the site to accelerate improvements and benefits
  • Supports Plant Managers and Leadership team to develop and deliver an engineering continuous improvement culture
  • Ensure Maintenance systems are fully utilised to optimise performance
  • Take ownership for housekeeping by utilising 5s & other JEM (JELD-WEN Excellence Model) tools - 'a place for everything and everything in its place'
  • Attend meetings relevant to my role, actively participate and add real value wherever possible
  • Attend daily SQDCIP boards, update, highlight priorities and actions to timescales. 
  • Support Leadership teams to control SQDCIP performance and continuously challenge the status quo
  • Support all teams through asking open questions, ensure a clear understanding and action accordingly
  •  Help fix the daily issues by priorities
  • Ensure the productivity and Capex projects have quantifiable and proven benefits.  Support project leaders to validate the project proposal and logic.
  • Ensure confidence in the projects, benefits, plan and delivery
  • Implement the project through delivery by ensuring the correct engineering tools and techniques are used and that the project is well manged to deliver the key milestones and benefits.
  • Support the business in identifying engineering improvement projects that make real impact to our customers and financials
  • Shift based role   

Experience and Background Requirements

  • Practical experience of PLC fault finding
  • Practical experience of working with AC motors and drives
  • Strong fault diagnosis and ratification skills on electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulics systems
  • Good knowledge of PPM and continuous improvement systems
  • IT Skills
  • LEAN techniques
  • Experience of a fast-moving environment in Manufacturing (or equivalent) is desirable but not essential
  • Proven ability to Lead Teams
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety in a production environment

  • Essential Electrical Apprenticeship
  • Essential 18th Edition qualification
  • 70/30 electrical bias split
  • Educated to at least HNC level or equivalent in a relevant mechanical or electrical engineering discipline or having sufficient experience to have gained these skills
  • IOSH qualification preferred
