Position Title:  Senior Sustaining Product Engineer


Position Rating/Level:   Management position


Job Purpose:  

The Senior Sustaining Product Engineer is responsible for the project management of the design and development of Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) and Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) related to product. Is the primary technical resource and is responsible for the interface between Product Engineering and the Manufacturing team during validation of NPD (New Product Development).  The primary function of this position is to facilitate DFM (design for manufacturing) into new products, including improvements to existing products to improve the manufacturability and performance of the product.  This position will work closely with PLMs, Vice Presidents, General Managers, Plant Managers, Product Engineering Manager, Project Manager, CI Manager and Manufacturing Managers to carry out a variety of project work.  This position will be responsible for leading problem-solving activities, guiding technical vision, driving requirements, estimating, scheduling, deploying field trials in production, communicating to stakeholders, and implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving processes to coordinate the execution of work.

  • This is a high-level position and requires little training and supervision by the Product Engineering Manager.  Considered the subject matter expert.
  • Manage design projects with a high level of complexity.
  • Manage/supervise work done by Designers and Sustaining Product Engineers.
  • Review drawings and Product Change Requests (ECR/ECN) for accuracy.
  • Support field trials by building, testing, and troubleshooting product.
  • Apply engineering background to develop unique solutions to problems.
  • Lead brainstorming groups.
  • Lead design reviews.
  • Lead Kaizen events.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE), Design failure mode and effect analysis (DFMA), Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) & Tolerance Stack Analysis
  • Analyzes risk areas of designs, plans implementation of product, and publishes assessments to stakeholders.
  • Lead and perform testing, validation, and reliability analysis to minimize risk and achieve a high level of quality assurance.
  • Review drawings and product change requests for accuracy.
  • Create mechanical/architectural drawings with a high level of complexity by reviewing models, sketches, descriptions, specifications, and supporting documents; confer with Product Engineers. The finished product must be a professional drawing package.
  • Prepares 3D models for Sustaining Product Engineers and designers to break down into assemblies, sub-assemblies, and detail drawings.
  • Utilize the drawing number system within Autodesk Vault.
  • Modify drawings by analyzing, resolving, and incorporating changes.
  • Maintain the project information within Autodesk Vault.

  • Performs preliminary bill of material check.
  • Generate/check bill of materials for the Data Department.
  • Responsible for assisting in the Drawing, CAD and 3D Modeling Standards.
  • Communicate workload and project schedules with Product Engineering Manager.
  • Build and test prototypes.
  • Maintain a sense of urgency/responsibility on a daily basis with all projects and communicate this to Designers and Sustaining Product Engineers.
  • Review designs with PLMs, plant personnel and Equipment Engineering.
  • Work with and train Sustaining Product Engineers 1& 2.
  • Evaluate materials and makes recommendations.
  • Keep abreast of trends in the industry, materials, and process technologies.
  • Work with VP’s, PLMs and GMs to ensure that Product Engineering is meeting their needs.



Preferred Position Requirements:

  • Education: BS in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • CAD and Drafting Skills, AutoCAD, Inventor, 3D modeling, GD&T principles.
  • Understanding and application of tolerances and datums and how to apply them.
  • Microsoft office (Word, Excel).
  • Experience: 8 plus years.
  • High level position in terms of the complexity of work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Requires little supervision and training by Product Engineering Manager.
  • Experience interfacing with outside suppliers.
  • Has maintained a professional drawing system.
  • Proven track record for on time and complete.



  • Up to 25% travel is anticipated.
