Director, Global Internal Communications

The Director of Internal Communications is a strategic communications leader responsible for creating a global internal communications strategy that keeps employees informed, builds confidence in the business strategy, and reinforces the actions the company is taking to enhance our values-based culture as a great place to work. Reporting to the VP Global Corporate Communications, the Director of Internal Communications will work closely with global communication teammates to create, shape and implement programs and related communications that further company-wide and business unit initiatives, support executive communications and improve internal communications channels.


This leader will work closely with executive leaders on their internal communication needs, ensuring consistent message alignment across the global organization while identifying opportunities for external communications.  He/she will need to be a creative storyteller and drive employee advocacy of the brand using innovative techniques and a research-driven approach.



Essential Functions:


  • Delivers an integrated internal communications strategy that builds employees’ understanding of the business and their role in future growth, while reinforcing the JELD-WEN culture and values
  • Creates global internal communications guidelines, governance models and a creates a unified voice across all employee communications
  • Partners with the global and regional communication teams to drive a consistent narrative both internally and externally
  • Partners closely with senior executives and cross-functional stakeholders, acting as a trusted strategic communication advisor, proactively supporting their communication needs, including talking points and script writing
  • Directs and prioritizes internal communications content creation and maintains a cadence of messaging from various channels – from videos to face-to-face to written, etc.
  • Owns, leads and drives improvement across all global communication tools and internal events including but not limited to, the company’s intranet, internal social media platform, town halls, manager toolkits and the annual global leadership conference
  • Leads and grows the internal communications team, continuing to scale its impact across the company while supporting each individual’s growth and development
  • Works with agencies and contractors to support internal communication activities, including video development, writing and planning
  • Supports internal communications on financial milestones, including M&A activity
  • Partners closely with corporate public relations and marketing to amplify any content externally
  • Works with HR to support employee value proposition strategy and brand efforts
  • Leads crisis communication efforts that impact employees, supporting regional needs and messaging
  • Drives measurable, data-driven results while creating and implementing unique, creative and highly impactful initiatives focused on internal audiences
  • Stays current with latest trends in internal communication channels and digital media, and makes recommendations for further development
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned






  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or similar
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in progressive responsibility in internal or employee communications
  • At least 3 years of people management experience, including management of outside agencies or contractors
  • Excellent communication skills, both written (email and formal documents) and verbal (meetings and presentations)
  • Strategic thinker with strong business acumen; experience in executive communications
  • Innovative storytelling capabilities and fluency in multiple content types – editorial, social, digital, etc.
  • Proven track record for developing and engaging high-performing teams
  • Knowledge and understanding of content management systems
  • Ability to build relationships and work in a cross-functional team environment across the enterprise
  • Excellent project management skills, problem-solving and decision-making ability; keeps the team organized and prioritizes projects for results
  • Able to look around corners and anticipate future needs
  • Proven track record producing quality content for audiences
