JELD-WEN is currently seeking a Corporate Counsel, Labor & Employment and Litigation to join our growing team. 

 

THE ROLE

The Company is seeking a junior-level attorney with experience in labor and employment law and workers’ compensation or general litigation to provide strategic guidance within the enterprise.  This position will interact with colleagues across the enterprise to provide expert knowledge, advice, and leadership to influence business decisions, shape legal policies, manage litigation, and address regulatory and employment issues.  This position will work closely with colleagues in Legal, Human Resources (HR), Finance-Shared Services, Plant leadership and other departments. Role responsibilities include (1) advising internal stakeholders on labor and employment legal matters within the United States; (2) handling external and other record requests related to litigation or other legal disputes; and (3) assisting in managing escalated warranty matters including management of outside counsel as assigned.   

 

This role will support the Labor & Employment, Compliance, and Litigation Teams within the Legal Department. The role reports to the Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment. This role is based in Charlotte, North Carolina and local candidates are preferred.
 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide practical labor & employment legal advice to Human Resources professionals and Company management. This responsibility includes legal research and oral and written advice on a broad range of employment and labor law issues (e.g., terminations and discipline, leaves of absence and reasonable accommodations, wage and hour considerations, harassment and discrimination investigations and outcomes, and labor union practices)
  • Lead and assist in managing litigation and outside counsel. Respond to demands, threats of litigation, and information requests and represents the Company in labor & employment, workers’ compensation, products liability, and general litigation
  • Draft legal correspondence for products liability and litigation areas and represent the Company in pre-litigation phases of legal disputes
  • Lead records requests (subpoena, discovery, other requests) processes to ensure timely and complete collection and delivery of required records
  • Lead and assist in development and drafting of policies and other communications for employee audiences
  • Develop and deliver training to HR partners and other colleagues on employment trends and compliance subjects
  • Partner with HR to design internal investigations; analyze legal and factual issues; conduct legal research; independently develop and present recommended legal strategies and case handling
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging legal developments, trends, and innovations
  • Serve as a thought leader in labor and employment law, staying ahead of emerging trends and proactively advising legal implications for business initiatives and policies
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in legal processes, setting the standard for excellence and supporting a culture of compliance and ethical business practices
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • 2 – 5 years expertise in employment law and litigation generally
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate clearly and professionally legal analysis
  • Ability to determine and understand the Company’s objectives and risk tolerance and to incorporate the information in making legal decisions
  • Ability to conduct and analyze legal research to determine applicable legal principles
  • Knowledge of and ability to analyze effect of Company policies on business activities
  • Ability to clearly articulate ideas, opinions, and information, in spoken and written form
  • Ability to adjust priorities in response to unanticipated events
  • Close attention to detail
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues with maturity and professionalism
  • Friendly, upbeat, with a great attitude and willingness to learn
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to lead, project manage, and/or influence cross-functional groups in high-stakes decision-making
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • Admitted to state bar and in good standing
  • 2 – 5 years of substantive labor and employment and litigation experience (employment defense or workers compensation litigation is a plus)
